Humana in the headlines: 7 recent updates

Humana is boosting its outlook for Medicare Advantage members in 2023, while preparing to shut down its SeniorBridge home care facilities.

Here are seven stories about the Louisville, Ky.-based payer Becker's has covered since Nov. 23:

  1. Humana projected it will add 125,000 more Medicare Advantage members in 2023 than it previously predicted. The company said in a Jan. 9 regulatory filing that it is expecting to add "at least" 625,000 Medicare Advantage members this year, up from its previous estimate of 500,000. That previous estimate, from a Dec. 1 Securities and Exchange Commission filing, was itself an increase from its original projection of 325,000 to 400,000 new members.

  1. Humana will lay off at least 1,162 employees in two states following the decision to close all its SeniorBridge home care facilities nationwide. The payer closed 16 facilities at the end of 2022 and said it plans to close its remaining seven locations in New York by March 5. In November, over 150 employees of Humana's SeniorBridge facility in Jupiter, Fla., were laid off.

  1. A Florida judge recommended that lawyers who settled a class action lawsuit against Humana and healthcare analytics company Cotiviti receive a lower fee than they asked for. The judge found that an award of $300,000 — equal to 37.5 percent of the class's fund — was unreasonable given how quickly the case was settled. He recommended an award of $220,000, equal to 30 percent of the fund.

  1. Humana Military and TriWest Healthcare Alliance were awarded the Defense Department's Tricare managed care support contracts. Humana Military scored the $70.9 billion East Region contract.

  1. Beth Bierbower, former president of the group and specialty benefits segment for Humana, departed to become CEO at Friday Health Plans.

  1. ConnectiCare President Karen Moran left the company to become president of Humana Military. Humana Military is a subsidiary of the insurer that partners with the Department of Defense to administer Tricare plans.

  1. Humana completed its public offering of $1.25 billion in senior notes Nov. 22. The company estimated net proceeds from the offerings will be about $1.23 billion after deducting underwriters' discounts and estimated offering expenses.
