Humana Military was awarded the $70.9 billion East Region contract, according to a Dec. 22 news release from the department. This is the sixth time Humana has been selected for a Tricare contract dating to 1996, according to a news release from the company.
TriWest Healthcare Alliance was awarded the $65.1 billion West Region contract, according to the Defense Department release. TriWest previously held Tricare contracts from 1996 to 2013, the company said.
The new contracts begin in 2024, according to the Defense Department. The nine-year contracts are the longest in the program’s history, according to Humana.
Centene currently holds Tricare’s west region contract, according to NBC affiliate KSDK. Centene said in a statement it is disappointed with the department’s decision. It said it has a debriefing scheduled with the Department Health Agency in January and has requested details regarding its decision.
“Following receipt of this information, we will be in a position to determine our options regarding the agency’s decision,” Centene said in the statement.
