10 women chosen to lead health insurance companies in 2022

From multiple Blue Cross companies to Centene, some of the nation's largest health insurance companies have chosen 10 women to lead this year: 

  1. Hometown Health, a part of Reno, Nev.-based Renown Health, named Bethany Sexton CEO Sept. 12. Former CEO David Hansen is retiring Oct. 7.

  2. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts named Sarah Iselin president and CEO Aug. 30, effective in 2023. Previously, she was executive vice president and COO at Blue Shield of California.

  3. Health Alliance Medical Plans, the insurance division of Urbana, Ill.-based Carle Health, named its COO, Sinead Rice Madigan, as president and CEO Aug 17. She has been with the company for 15 years.

  4. Trillium Community Health Plan, a Centene subsidiary, named Sarah Brewer president and CEO, effective July 25. Previously, she was vice president of Medicaid services and senior director of population health for Portland, Ore.-based Legacy Health.

  5. Molina Healthcare of New Mexico named Carolyn Ingram as plan president June 30. She previously served as the state's Medicaid director from 2003 to 2011.

  6. UnitedHealthcare promoted Gloria Sargent to CEO of commercial operations in Missouri and Central and Southern Illinois, the Alton Telegraph reported June 9. She has been with the company for 20 years and most recently served as the executive director of the company's Missouri operations.

  7. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma named Vice President Stephania Grober as president, effective May 1. She joined BCBS in 1997 and has held roles in sales, account management and large group marketing positions.

  8. Centene appointed Sarah London as CEO March 22. Prior to the top position, she served as vice chair of the Centene board of directors. Before joining the company in 2020, she was  chief product officer at Optum Analytics.

  9. Covered California, the state's ACA exchange, named Jessica Altman CEO Feb. 18. Previously, she served as Pennsylvania's insurance commissioner.

  10. Colorado Access, the state's largest Medicaid plan, named Annie Lee as president and CEO Feb. 14. Ms. Lee is the first woman and the first person of color to hold the role. She previously served as executive director of community health and Medicaid strategies at Children's Hospital Colorado in Aurora.
