5 recent payer executive moves

Several payers are creating new executive-level roles to double-down on investing in sustainability, state programs and diversity. 

Here are five recent payer executive moves:

1. John Murabito is retiring from Cigna after a 19-year tenure as the payer's chief human resources officer and chief administrative officer. 

2. Mr. Murabito will be replaced by Cynthia Ryan, senior vice president and human resources officer for Cigna's U.S. businesses, who has a 23-year tenure with Cigna.

3. Patricia Lewis was named UnitedHealth Group's first chief sustainability officer. Ms. Lewis, formerly UnitedHealth Group's chief human resources officer, will lead the company's sustainability and environmental, social and governance efforts.

4. Matthew Herndon was named senior vice president and chief state programs officer of nonprofit payer Fallon Health. Mr. Herndon is the first to hold the newly created role, which was developed to further invest in serving state Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. 

5. Jessica Altman was named CEO of Covered California, the state's healthcare marketplace. Ms. Altman enters the role after serving as insurance commissioner for the Pennsylvania Department of Insurance.
