Centene cancels plan for $1B East Coast headquarters in Charlotte

Centene is no longer moving forward with its plan to build a 2.4 million-square-foot East Coast campus in North Carolina because of the shift to hybrid and remote work, The Charlotte Observer reported Aug. 18.

“Today, almost 90 percent of our workforce is working fully remote or in a hybrid work environment, and workplace flexibility is essential to attracting and retaining our top talent,” a Centene spokesperson told the newspaper.

First announced in 2020, the St. Louis-based payer expected to begin opening parts of the campus in 2022 and bring 6,000 jobs to the Charlotte area. The six planned buildings would have been centered around information technology.

The company was set to receive $450 million in tax incentives over 39 years for the project.

Centene will keep its existing physical space in Charlotte’s uptown neighborhood, and its 700 employees in North Carolina will remain remote or hybrid.
