8 payers buying, selling office spaces

Payers are selling and shifting office spaces as employees work in remote or hybrid models. 

Here are eight payer office moves Becker's has reported since December 2022. 

  1. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota is planning to vacate its 443,000-square-foot headquarters in Eagan, Minn.

  2. UnitedHealth Group's 20-acre corporate headquarters in Minnetonka, Minn., is up for lease. The company has occupied the space since 1998, and the lease is through the end of 2024.

  3. The building housing Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield's Connecticut headquarters will be up for auction in April. Anthem is the largest of four tenants in the building, occupying around 48,000 square feet in the 280,000-square-foot building in Wallingford, Conn.

  4. Humana moved out of a four-story, 96,000 square-foot building in Miramar, Fla. The move is part of Humana's hybrid pivot in which employees work from home at least part of the year.

  5. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is relocating the headquarters of subsidiary Blue Care Network, moving 500 employees from its Southfield, Mich., campus to Detroit. 
  1. Elevance Health sold 580,000 square feet of office space in Richmond, Va. The insurer sold the 30-acre property with two buildings to Kinsale Capital Group, a specialty insurance company based in Richmond, for $76.2 million.

  2. Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota is selling a 156,000-square-foot building housing subsidiary Noridian Healthcare Solutions. The building in Fargo, N.D., has been listed for sale at $19.2 million.

  3. UnitedHealthcare purchased a $1.15M building near its existing offices in Minnetonka, Minn. The one-story building located on an 8,500-square-foot property is the third the payer has purchased in Opus Business Park in Minnetonka.
