Southfield is a northern suburb of the city. The payer will have around 5,900 employees assigned to its Detroit campus once the move is complete.

In a statement to the newspaper, BCBS Michigan CEO Daniel Loepp said the company has made “strategic efforts” to invest in the state’s urban centers.

“Our employee bases in the downtowns of Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Traverse City and Marquette are a distinctive part of our character as a company,” Mr. Loepp said.
