Medicare Advantage insurer Clover Health is aiming for Counterpart Health — a subsidiary bringing the carrier’s AI-powered clinical decision support tool to external payers and providers — to serve “as a long-term growth engine,” a Clover executive said on a quarterly earnings call.
The subsidiary has been expanding Counterpart Assistant to external markets since 2024.
“We are beginning to see early traction within Counterpart, with growing provider adoption in markets where we do not currently operate plans,” Clover’s interim CFO, Clay Thornton, said. “We expect to expand that footprint further over time.”
The company’s near-term goal is including more total lives on Counterpart. Mr. Thornton said investments in Counterpart focus on both its ability to scale across the industry and product development.
“We view these investments as strengthening the clinical and economic performance of our own MA members while also creating incremental long-term growth opportunities outside of our core insurance business,” he added.
Counterpart launched a generative AI chat feature in the fall, and Clover has also relied on Counterpart infrastructure to engage with federal interoperability initiatives. Clover Health CEO Andrew Toy previously called his company “the AI leader in Medicare Advantage.”
