Centene in the headlines: 8 updates

From Vanguard Group acquiring the sale of its scrapped East Coast campus, to completing the sale of its U.K. companies, here are eight updates on Centene that Becker's has reported since Feb. 6: 

1. Investment advisory firm Vanguard Group is acquiring the Charlotte, N.C.-based office campus that was once planned to be Centene's East Coast headquarters.

2. Centene CEO Sarah London was paid $18.6 million in total compensation in 2023, up from $13.2 million in 2022. 

3. Centene was 165th on Fortune's list of the 200 most innovative companies in 2024. 

4. Measuring the return on investment for social determinants of health initiatives is no easy task for managed care organizations, but Centene's Medicaid plan in Kentucky, WellCare, is using members' data to create customized and local solutions aimed at improving health outcomes across the state.

5. Private lawyers made at least $108 million in fees from payments Centene made to states to settle overcharging allegations, The New York Times reported. 

6. Centene subsidiary Meridian Health Plan of Illinois will reimburse a portion of the certification fees for hospitals that participate in The Joint Commission's Health Care Equity Certification. 

7. With a total net income of $2.7 billion, Centene had the fifth-highest profit among big payers in 2023. 

8. Centene completed the sale of its U.K. companies.
