Centene: States slow to pick up Medicaid weight-loss drug coverage

Few states are adding coverage of GLP-1 drugs for weight loss, Centene executives said.

Centene is the largest Medicaid managed care organization. So far, GLP-1 drugs for weight loss have not been material to the company as a whole, CFO Drew Asher told investors on an April 26 call.

Five states provide unrestricted coverage of Wegovy and Saxenda, GLP-1 drugs for weight loss, according to a study published in JAMA in March.

For states that do cover the drug, Centene is quick to show them data on costs, Mr. Asher said.

"That's where the states control the formulary, the preferred drug list, that we need to administer and take risk for," Mr. Asher said. "We just need to make sure that the states have the data so they can match rates with the cost that they choose to allow in their benefit plans."
