Centene in the headlines: 8 recent developments

From canceling plans to build an East Coast campus in North Carolina to settling allegations it overcharged Washington's Medicaid program, here are eight stories about Centene that Becker's has covered since Aug. 18.

1. Centene was one of four payers named among the nation's best places to work in healthcare, according to a ranking published Sept. 7 by Fortune and Great Place to Work.

2. Centene subsidiary Fidelis Care is committing to remote and hybrid employee work styles and will exit some leases for office space in the Buffalo and Niagara Falls region of New York, The Buffalo News reported Sept. 6.

3. Centene named Ashlee Knuckey as chief ethics and compliance officer Sept. 1. 

4. Louisiana said Aug. 31 it intends to contract with Centene subsidiary Magellan to administer pharmacy benefits for the state's Medicaid managed care program.

5. Centene issued a notice of termination for its contract with Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare beginning next year over reimbursement rates, a move that would affect 3 million members nationwide, the Phoenix Business Journal reported Aug. 30. The contract is set to expire Dec. 31 and is with 19 Tenet-owned health systems, which includes 60 hospitals across Texas, California, Florida, Michigan and Arizona, a Tenet spokesperson told Becker's.

6. Centene subsidiary Health Net of California was one of three plans awarded contracts in Medi-Cal's first statewide managed care plan procurement process Aug. 25, but the insurer said it was disappointed to learn it did not win contracts in three counties it has a "deep history in serving." 

7. Centene agreed Aug. 24 to pay $19 million to the state of Washington and $13 million to the federal government to settle allegations it overcharged the state Medicaid program for pharmacy benefit management services. 

8. Centene canceled its plan to build a 2.4 million-square-foot East Coast campus in North Carolina because of the shift to hybrid and remote work, The Charlotte Observer reported Aug. 18.
