3 payers tapped for Medi-Cal contracts

The California Department of Healthcare Services selected Molina Healthcare, Anthem Blue Cross Partnership Plan and Centene subsidiary Health Net for managed care contracts.

The new Medi-Cal managed care contracts begin Jan. 1, 2024, and run through 2028, according to an Aug. 25 news release from the department.

The department said it is strengthening its oversight of its managed care providers. Payments to plans are now more closely linked to the value provided in terms of member access and outcomes, according to the news release. It said this will incentivize the plans to provide care in a way that is "aimed at improving health and well-being rather than just providing services."

The managed care organizations have also committed to meeting stronger requirements that hold them and their subcontractors accountable for reducing health disparities and improving health outcomes for Medi-Cal members, according to the news release. Requirements include the organizations to address unmet social needs that contribute to health and wellness, such as food insecurity and housing.

"The bold commitments of this procurement will help ensure that Medi-Cal members get the healthcare services they need and deserve," California Medicaid Director Jacey Cooper said in the release.
