From several new CEOs to a chief ethics officer at Centene, these are 10 payer exec moves reported by Becker's in the first half of September: 

  1. Humana added former Intuit CEO Brad Smith to its board Sept. 15. He was CEO at Intuit from 2008 to 2018.

  2. Former Evernorth and Express Scripts CEO Tim Wentworth was named chair of the board at Forge Health Sept. 14, a value-based behavioral health provider.

  3. Former UnitedHealthcare CEO Steve Nelson was named CEO of JenCare, a senior-focused primary care practice, on Sept. 13. He was CEO at United from 2017 to 2019.

  4. Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Virginia President Jeff Ricketts is retiring in September after 40 years with the company.

  5. Hometown Health named Bethany Sexton CEO Sept. 12. Former CEO David Hansen is retiring Oct. 7.

  6. Former UnitedHealthcare CEO Ken Burdick was named CEO of mental healthcare provider LifeStance Health Sept. 8. He was CEO at United from 2006 to 2008.

  7. Former CMS Administrator Seema Verma joined the healthcare advisory board of AI-driven payer technology developer Shift Technologies Sept. 7.

  8. UPMC Health Plan's Workpartners promoted Pat Kalnas to vice president of business development, sales and marketing Sept. 6.

  9. Centene subsidiary WellCare of Kentucky named Chirag Patel, MD, its chief medical officer and Marc Nyarko its COO Sept. 6.

  10. Centene named Ashlee Knuckey as chief ethics and compliance officer Sept. 1.
