Centene names former Humana exec as chief operating officer

Centene has named Susan Smith as chief operating officer.

Ms. Smith spent 19 years at Humana, according to a Nov. 15 news release, most recently as SVP, clinical, quality and enterprise solutions president. She previously held several senior roles at Humana, including SVP of clinical solutions and SVP of Medicare.

"Susan is a seasoned operator who brings extensive experience in the government-sponsored payer space," Centene CEO Sarah London said. "Her operational expertise in quality and customer experience, proven track record and leadership during transformational times — coupled with her steadfast commitment to the members and communities we support — make her the right candidate for this role."

Ms. Smith joined Centene as senior vice president in June, according to her LinkedIn profile.

Long-time Centene COO Brent Layton stepped down in December 2022 and was recently named CEO of Sharecare. In May, James Murray, who was named COO after Mr. Layton, announced his plans to retire in 2024.

Ms. Smith will assume the COO role in January.
