Highmark lays off more employees

Highmark Health has laid off 47 employees, PennLive reported May 7.

In March, the Pittsburgh-based organization laid off 182 employees in Pennsylvania, Delaware, West Virginia, and parts of New York, including 159 individuals in the insurance division. In 2023, Highmark laid off more than 250 employees.

"Reinventing health means reinventing how our organization operates," a Highmark spokesperson told PennLive. "Highmark Health is actively transforming to meet the changing needs of members and our communities through our Living Health model while maintaining financial strength and stability. This transformation requires that we continue to reimagine and simplify our operations to effectively and efficiently achieve the quintuple aim -- better patient experience, clinician satisfaction, health equity and health outcomes, with lower costs."

"We are focused on building the workforce of [the] future, which requires identifying talent gaps, investing in in-demand roles, such as nursing, and adapting technologies, such as AI, to better anticipate demand and drive value for consumers."

Highmark told the outlet it hired more than 6,100 employees last year and more than 1,300 this year.
