The company opened the claims center in Ferguson, Mo., in 2016, in response to civil unrest following the death of Michael Brown, a Black 18-year-old killed by a white police officer, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. It employed up to 250 people, mostly from Ferguson, at the center.
The claims center has been mostly empty since employees started working remotely in 2020. The donation is the largest-ever to any Urban League in the country, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
The Urban League plans to use the center to host a childcare center, outreach programs, a food pantry distribution center and more.
Centene has cut back its office space in recent years. In 2023, the company listed several buildings, including a $14 million office space in Maryland Heights, Mo., for sale or lease.
