UnitedHealth/Optum will be top purchaser of health tech startups this year, survey finds

Optum will be responsible for a quarter of all health tech startup acquisitions this year, according to Venrock's "2022 Healthcare Prognosis" survey.

The survey included 250 respondents from health tech startups, large employers, payers, providers, academics, public entities, investors and professional service providers from March 17-25.

Four key takeaways:

  • Are special-purpose acquisition companies on their way out?
    • No: 75 percent
    • Yes: 25 percent
  • Potential acquirers that will fuel consolidation:
    • UnitedHealthcare/Optum: 25 percent
    • Little companies merging: 21 percent
    • Private equity: 21 percent
    • Big Tech: 19 percent
    • CVS/Walgreens: 9 percent
    • Other pure play payers: 5 percent
  • Top three companies for favorite 2022 initial public offering: 
    • VillageMD: 33 percent
    • Omada: 32 percent
    • Hinge Health: 30 percent
  • Top three companies expected to rebound:
    • Teladoc Health: 34 percent
    • One Medical: 32 percent
    • Oak Street Health: 30 percent
