UnitedHealth Group in the headlines: 10 updates

From rolling back a planned gastroenterology endoscopy prior authorization policy to making an unsolicited cash offer to acquire Amedisys, here are 10 updates on UnitedHealth Group Becker's has reported since May 22.    

1. UnitedHealth Group ranked 11th on Fortune's ROL100 Ranking, which uses publicly available information to assess Return on Leadership scores for the top 100 companies on the latest Fortune 500 list.

 2. UnitedHealth Group was the highest ranked healthcare company on the Fortune 500, the annual list of the largest corporations in the U.S. ranked by revenue for the 2022 fiscal year. 

 3. Home and hospice care provider Amedisys received an unsolicited cash offer from UnitedHealth Group's Optum to merge, following an agreement in May to be purchased by infusion services provider Option Care Health.

 4. UnitedHealthcare rolled back plans to implement a gastroenterology endoscopy prior authorization policy and instead set up an advance notification process for non-screening GI procedures. The change came following pushback from GI societies and other medical organizations.   

 5. CVS Health and UnitedHealth Group said they are positioning the U.S. for a shift away from fee-for-service healthcare and will thus save Americans money. Several experts weighed in to Fortune on whether the growing size of the payer-providers is good or bad for healthcare.

 6. UnitedHealth Group was one of four payers recognized as climate and sustainability leaders in 2023 by Forbes and USA Today.

 7. UnitedHealth Group was one of eight payers listed among "America's Best Employers for New Grads," by Forbes

 8. UnitedHealth Group was one of 8 payers named in Points of Light's 11th annual "Civic 50 honorees," a national standard for corporate citizenship and how companies use their time, skills and resources to drive social impact in their communities and company. 

 9. UnitedHealth Group has the highest stock price per share on the Dow Jones Industrial Average, it's the 10th heaviest-weighted stock on the S&P 500, and it's the largest healthcare company in the nation by market cap and revenue — the Minnesota-based healthcare giant achieved this through strategic vision and capital management, CNBC reported in May. 

10. The Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations sent letters to UnitedHealth Group, CVS Health and Humana in May seeking internal documents detailing how the companies decide to approve or deny Medicare Advantage claims, including how the payers use artificial intelligence in the process.
