4 payers recognized as climate leaders in 2023

Four payers have been recognized as climate and sustainability leaders in 2023 by Forbes and USA Today.

The Cigna Group and UnitedHealth Group were recognized as "net zero leaders" by Forbes on May 31 for their goals of reducing or eliminating their carbon emissions by 2050.

Forbes used data from Sustainalytics and Morningstar to rank the top 100 U.S. companies best positioned for a net-zero 2050. Companies were analyzed within the context of their industry and the location of business operations. Cigna was 31st on the list and UnitedHealth was 76th.

On May 23, Elevance Health, Cigna and CVS Health were recognized on USA Today's inaugural list of America's Climate Leaders in 2023, which was developed with Statista.

The ranking of 400 companies recognizes organizations with more than $50 million in revenue in 2021 and that cut their carbon footprint from 2019 to 2021.

Other criteria included year-over-year reduction of emission intensity, emission intensity in relation to annual revenue, total tons of CO2 equivalents the company emitted, total emissions reduction, and participation in emission reduction programs.
