Elevance Health in the headlines: 8 recent updates

Elevance Health posted $2 billion in profit in the first quarter of 2023, according to its earnings report published April 19. 

Here are eight recent updates about Elevance Health and its Anthem subsidiaries Becker's has reported since April 17. 

  1. Becker's sat down with Anthony Nguyen, MD, chief clinical officer at Elevance Health, to discuss the company's plans to expand its concierge care program to 40,000 members by the end of 2023. 

  2. Hospitals across New Hampshire say Anthem's operations and overall performance in the state has left providers with $300 million in unprocessed claims and created "universal dissatisfaction" with the Elevance Health subsidiary. 

  3. Elevance Health is planning to expand its post-acute care management program, a move the company's leaders say will contribute to the payer's growth in 2023. 

  4. Elevance Health does not cover GLP-1 drugs prescribed only for weight loss, except in states that require coverage of the drugs by law. On an April 19 investor call, Elevance Health CFO John Gallina said the company does cover GLP-1 drugs meant for treating diabetes. 

  5. Anthem BCBS and Winchester, Va.-based Valley Health settled a dispute over claims reimbursement out of court. 

  6. Elevance Health posted double-digit revenue growth and beat investor expectations in the first quarter of 2023, according to the company's earnings report. 

  7. Monica Schmude will lead Anthem BCBS of Virginia, joining the payer after 13 years at Cigna. 

  8. Carelon, the care delivery arm of Elevance Health, opened its first brick-and-mortar integrated healthcare facility. The new location in Fayetteville, N.C., will offer advanced primary care and behavioral health services, along with nonclinical counseling from a multidisciplinary team of clinicians.
