Cigna in the headlines: 10 updates

From suing — and getting sued by — the FTC, to naming a new chief legal officer, here are 10 updates on Cigna and its subsidiaries that Becker’s has reported since Aug. 28:

1. The Federal Trade Commission is suing Cigna’s Express Scripts, CVS Caremark, UnitedHealth’s Optum Rx, alleging the pharmacy benefit managers are inflating insulin prices. Cigna, CVS and UnitedHealth are asking FTC Chairwoman Lina Khan and FTC Commissioners Alvaro Bedoya and Rebecca Kelly Slaughter to rescue themselves from the case, alleging “serious bias” against PBMs. 

2. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit against major insulin manufacturers and PBMs, including Cigna’s Express Scripts, over an alleged conspiracy to increase insulin prices. 

3. GLP-1’s are the No. 1 question on employers’ minds when it comes to healthcare benefits, Kasey Raetz, PharmD, told Becker’s. Cigna’s EncircleRx program provides some answers. 

4. Cigna is one of 62 payers participating in CMS’ Medicare Advantage Value-Based Insurance Design model in 2025. 

5. Cigna Healthcare is exiting Medicare Advantage markets or making service area reductions in eight states for 2025.

6. FlexJobs named Cigna’s Express Scripts one of the 100 companies in the U.S. for jobs that consist of some remote work and some in-office work. 

7. Cigna is suing the FTC and Ms. Khan over what it describes as an “unfair, biased, erroneous, and defamatory” report on PBMs released by the agency earlier this year.  

8. Florida’s insurance commissioner gave the green light for Health Care Service Corp. to purchase Cigna’s Medicare business in the state.

9. Cigna is launching an “E-Treatment” option to allow members to get urgent care without any direct video or phone interaction with a provider. 

10. Cigna named Andrea Nelson as chief legal officer.
