Aetna in the headlines: 7 recent updates

Aetna has been involved in a series of legal challenges and garnered workforce awards in recent weeks. 

Here are seven updates about Aetna and parent company CVS Health Becker's has published since June 30. 

  1. Aetna is one of six payers being sued by the CEO of a laboratory company acquitted in a $1.4 billion fraud scheme, who alleges the companies made false allegations to regulators and prosecutors to avoid paying millions in legitimate claims.

  1. From major positions at Aetna to the president of CVS Caremark, these are six top executives who have recently announced departures from CVS Health. 

  1. Aetna's overall prior authorization denial rate in its Medicaid managed care plans was 12.1 percent in 2019, according to an audit from HHS' Office of Inspector General. 

  1. The California Supreme Court ruled that the state's medical association has standing to sue Aetna's operations in California for allegedly interfering with the medical judgment of physicians who refer patients to out-of-network providers.

  1. Aetna was one of 16 health insurers named among the nation's top 1,000 employers in 2023 by Newsweek.

  1. A New York judge temporarily blocked New York City's plan to switch 250,000 retired city employees from traditional Medicare to an Aetna Medicare Advantage plan. Judge Lyle Frank sided with a group of retirees challenging the plan, issuing a temporary injunction on July 6 that prevents the city from requiring retirees to switch from their current insurance to Medicare Advantage.

  1. A Kraft Heinz Co. employee benefits group representing employees, retirees and their dependents is suing Aetna for allegedly breaching its fiduciary duties and using its role as a third-party claims administrator "to enrich itself to Kraft Heinz's detriment."
