Aetna in the headlines: 10 updates

From a “landmark policy change” to CVS Health announcing another round of layoffs, here are 10 updates on Aetna that Becker’s has reported since Aug. 13:

1. CVS Health will lay off 416 employees at Aetna’s headquarters in Hartford, Conn.

2. A Kansas judge denied Aetna’s petition for judicial review of the state’s Medicaid contract awards. 

3. The HHS Office of Inspector General estimated that HealthAssurance Pennsylvania, an Aetna subsidiary, received $4.2 million in overpayments between 2017 and 2018.  

4. Aetna and HCA Healthcare hospitals in Florida reached a new contract agreement, avoiding a split that would have left 48 hospitals out-of-network.

5. Aetna is facing a class-action lawsuit alleging the insurer improperly denied gender-affirming care. 

6. Renton, Wash.-based Providence reached a contract agreement with Aetna to keep commercial members in Washington state in network. 

7. Aetna was one of six payer named among Newsweek’s top 604 corporate brands in America.

8. Aetna will cover intrauterine insemination as a medical benefit for eligible plans, a move the insurer called a “landmark policy change.” 

9. Pennsylvania selected Aetna, UPMC Health Plan, Centene, AmeriHealth Caritas and Jefferson Health’s Health Partners to administer its Community HealthChoices  program.

10. Aetna is the second most likely to overturn a prior authorization denial decision when appealed, according to a KFF analysis.
