Meet UnitedHealth Group's executive leadership team

UnitedHealth Group recently announced that Neil de Crescenzo departed his role as CEO of Optum Insight and was replaced by Roger Connor. In addition to that role, Mr. Connor is continuing to serve as executive vice president of enterprise operations and services at UnitedHealth.

Here is more information about Mr. Connor and the other executives who make up UnitedHealth Group's leadership team, according to the company's website: a

Andrew Witty, CEO: Mr. Witty has served as UnitedHealth Group's CEO since February 2021. Before that, he was executive vice president of UnitedHealthGroup and CEO of its Optum arm. Mr. Witty took an unpaid leave of absence between April and December 2020 to serve as a special envoy at the World Health Organization, co-leading efforts to accelerate the response to COVID-19. 

Dirk McMahon, president and COO: Mr. McMahon was appointed to his current role at UnitedHealth Group in February 2021. He was previously UnitedHealthcare's CEO. Prior to that, he served as Optum's president and COO. 

John Rex, executive vice president and CFO: Mr. Rex was appointed to his current role at UnitedHealth Group in 2016. He previously served as Optum's executive vice president and CFO. 

Cory Alexander, strategic adviser: As a strategic adviser at UnitedHealth Group, Mr. Alexander provides advice and perspective on the company's external, societal and political environment. He previously served as the company's executive vice president for corporate affairs. 

Catherine Anderson, senior vice president of health equity strategy: Ms. Anderson is responsible for engaging internal and external stakeholders and partners to shape policy, convene communities and design interventions to reduce disparities. She previously served as  senior vice president of policy and strategic engagement for UnitedHealthcare Community & State.

Rupert Bondy, executive vice president and chief legal officer: Mr. Bondy joined UnitedHealth Group in March 2022. He previously served as senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary for Reckitt, a consumer goods group focused on hygiene, health and nutrition products.

Heather Cianfrocco, Optum president: Ms. Cianfrocco has been with UnitedHealth Group since 2008 and has served as Optum's president since August 2023. She previously served as CEO of Optum Rx. 

Terry Clark, executive vice president and chief marketing officer: Mr. Clark has served as UnitedHealth Group's chief marketing officer since 2014. In 2022, he added chief marketing and customer officer for Optum to his responsibilities. He previously served as the chief marketing officer for UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement. 

Roger Connor, Optum Insight CEO and Optum executive vice president of enterprise operations and services: Mr. Connor joined UnitedHealth Group as executive vice president of enterprise operations in January. He added the role of Optum Insight CEO in September. He previously served as president of vaccines and global health at GlaxoSmithKline.    

Patrick Conway, MD, CEO of OptumRx: Dr. Conway was named OptumRx CEO in August. He joined Optum in 2020 and previously served as the CEO of Care Solutions. Prior to joining Optum he was president and CEo of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. 

Sandeep Dadlani, executive vice president, chief digital and technology officer: Mr. Dadlani has been in his current role since September and leads Optum Technology. He joined the company from Mars, where he served as its chief digital officer. 

Wyatt Decker, MD, chief physician: Dr. Decker said July 19 that he was taking on the role of UnitedHealth Group's chief physician after serving as Optum Health CEO since 2019. In his new role, he will focus on strengthening value-based care capabilities and innovative clinical solutions.

Amar Desai, MD, Optum Health CEO: Dr. Desai said July 19 he was taking on the role of Optum Health CEO after serving as executive-in-residence since April. He rejoined UnitedHealth Group after serving as CVS Health's president for healthcare delivery. He previously served as president and CEO of Optum California and Optum Pacific West from 2019 to 2022. 

Joy Fitzgerald, chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer: Ms. Fitzgerald has served in her current role since June 2021. Prior to joining UnitedHealth Group, she served as chief diversity and inclusion officer at Eli Lilly.

Vivian Hunt, chief innovation officer: Ms. Hunt was named UnitedHealth Group's chief innovation officer in October. She previously served as a senior partner at McKinsey & Co. 

Patricia Lewis, executive vice president and chief sustainability officer: Ms. Lewis was named UnitedHealthGroup's chief sustainability officer in February 2022. In that role, she leads the development and strategy of environmental sustainability goals, as well as health equity and diversity, equity and inclusion commitments and initiatives. Ms. Lewis previously served as the company's executive vice president and chief human resources officer.  

Richard Mattera, senior vice president and chief development officer: Mr. Mattera has served in his current role since 2020. He previously served as Optum's chief legal officer and has led the merger and acquisition legal function at UnitedHealth Group for almost a decade. 

Erin McSweeney, executive vice president and chief people officer: Ms. McSweeney has served as chief people officer since March 2022. In that role, she develops and implements the company's enterprise people and culture strategy and strengthens leadership alignment. She previously was Optum's executive vice president and chief human resources officer. 

Tom Roos, senior vice president and chief accounting officer: Mr. Roos joined the company in 2015 and is responsible for Securities and Exchange Commission reporting, accounting policy, tax and enterprise risk management.

Dan Schumacher, UnitedHealth Group chief strategy and growth officer: Mr. Schumacher has served as UnitedHealth Group's chief strategy and growth officer since April 2021. He also served as Optum Insight CEO from April 2022 to January. 

Jennifer Smoter, senior vice president and chief communications officer: Ms. Smoter joined UnitedHealth Group in March 2021 and was previously the vice president of external affairs and communications at Intellia Therapeutics, a biotech startup. 

Zack Sopcak, senior vice president of investor relations: Mr. Sopack was named the company's vice president for capital market communications and investor relations in March 2022. He joined the company in 2019 as vice president of investor relations. He was previously Morgan Stanley's lead analyst for managed care organizations and healthcare facilities. 

Brian Thompson, UnitedHealthcare CEO: Mr. Thompson was named UnitedHealthcare's CEO in April 2021. He was previously CEO of UnitedHealthcare government programs and Medicare and retirement businesses. 

Margaret-Mary Wilson, MD, executive vice president and chief medical officer: Dr. Wilson was named to her current role in December 2021. She joined UnitedHealth Group in 2008 and most recently served as associate chief medical officer before attaining her current title. 

Anne Yau, senior vice president of social responsibility and president of the United Health Foundation: Ms. Yau was named to her current role in September. She joined UnitedHealth Group in 2010 and led several enterprise-wide efforts to advance the company's policy and advocacy priorities, and social responsibility initiatives.
