CVS Health named Steve Nelson as president of Aetna, effective Nov. 6.
Here are five things to know about Aetna's new leader:
1. Mr. Nelson started his career as an administrative fellow at Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Healthcare in 1988. He joined Detroit-based Henry Ford Health System in 1989 and held various leadership roles over the course of nine years at the system.
2. He held several executive positions with UnitedHealthcare, including serving as CEO from 2017 through 2019. His other roles within the company included serving as CEO of its Medicare and Retirement division and CEO of its Community and State division.
3. In 2020, Mr. Nelson was named CEO of DuPage Medical Group, the largest independent physician group in Illinois.
4. In 2022, Mr. Nelson was hired to lead a joint venture formed between older adult care provider ChenMed and Humana. He was named president of ChenMed in 2023 and CEO in February.
5. He is the chairman of physician services company Envision Healthcare's board of directors. He has held the role since the company emerged from its financial restructuring process in November 2023.
