ChenMed names former UnitedHealthcare leader CEO

Older adult care provider ChenMed has named President Steve Nelson its CEO, effective Feb. 1.

Chris Chen, MD, current CEO of the Miami-based company, will become executive chairman of the board, according to a Jan. 23 ChenMed news release. ChenMed provides primary care to older adults and Medicare Advantage enrollees in more than 130 clinics in 15 states.

Mr. Nelson served as CEO of UnitedHealthcare from 2017 to 2019 and was hired to lead JenCare, a joint venture formed in 2011 between ChenMed and Humana, in 2022. His transition to ChenMed CEO comes after he was tapped to lead day-to-day operations as president in July. At that time, Dr. Chen stepped back from daily management but retained the CEO title.

ChenMed also announced that CFO Mike Redmond will transition to the role of special adviser to the CEO and board of directors, according to the release. Mike Bruff, the company's executive vice president of finance, will take over as CFO.
