ChristianaCare drops Humana Medicare Advantage

Newark, Del.-based ChristianaCare is out of network with Humana's Medicare Advantage plans as of Jan. 1.

According to the health system's website, its four hospital campuses and all other practices and services are out of network with Humana. ChristianaCare HomeHealth is still in network with Humana, however.

A spokesperson for ChristianaCare told Becker's the health system and Humana were unable to agree on new contract terms for 2024.

"We continue to be open to negotiations with Humana for future coverage offerings," the spokesperson said.

The system mailed letters to Humana Medicare Advantage members in September and November informing them of the upcoming split, and outlined how to select a different Medicare Advantage plan if they chose to do so, the spokesperson said.

ChristianaCare is still in network with other Medicare Advantage plans, including Aetna, Alterwood, WellCare, Cigna, Highmark and UnitedHealthcare.

A spokesperson for Humana told Becker's the insurer is working with members to "help them select new in-network providers to ensure their care is not interrupted."

The change has no effect on Humana Medicare supplement policyholders, the spokesperson said.

A growing number of hospitals and health systems are dropping payers' Medicare Advantage plans or dropping Medicare Advantage entirely. Becker's has reported at least 15 systems dropping some or all MA plans since September.

Among the most commonly cited reasons are excessive prior authorization denial rates and slow payments from insurers.
