CareSource, Walmart partnership targets health disparities

Dayton, Ohio-based managed care organization CareSource is partnering with Walmart to tackle racial health inequities.

The three-year agreement aims to create "innovative, evidence-based solutions to improve health outcomes in under-resourced and underserved communities where racial health inequities are widespread," according to a Feb. 28 CareSource news release.

The partnership will begin in Ohio with a focus on cardiometabolic conditions, according to the release. Walmart's in-store community health works will conduct state-approved health risk and social needs assessments and connect select CareSource members to community resources, life skills support and health literacy education. Eligible CareSource members will receive monthly funds to spend on food, a Walmart+ membership for free delivery and access to telenutrition services.

The companies will also partner in Georgia on a maternal and child health program to support positive lifestyle behavior change and improve maternal and child health outcomes, according to the release. Georgia has the second-highest maternal mortality rate in the U.S.
