SCAN Health Plan named Gabriel Waterman, MD, as chief clinical officer on Sept. 25.

Dr. Waterman will shape SCAN’s clinical efforts by harnessing clinical expertise, analytics, technology and operational capabilities. Dr. Waterman’s work will include bolstering healthcare services and SCAN’s Clinical Center of Excellence, which designs and rolls out clinical programs. Dr. Waterman will also oversee SCAN’s own clinicians to support select high-risk members.

A top priority for Dr. Waterman is leading an organization-wide initiative to ensure every member always has a primary care appointment on the books.

“Our opportunity is to move from completing clinical tasks to taking greater ownership of clinical outcomes,” Dr. Waterman said in a news release.

Dr. Waterman most recently served as a clinical leader at SCAN Health Plan, informing the national care delivery strategy and leading SCAN’s institutional special needs plan. He previously worked at CareMore Health and is a practicing primary care physician.

At the Becker's 5th Annual Fall Payer Issues Roundtable, taking place November 2–3 in Chicago, payer executives and healthcare leaders will come together to discuss value-based care, regulatory changes, cost management strategies and innovations shaping the future of payer-provider collaboration.
