6 recent payer workforce updates

Some payers are instituting layoffs, while others are hiring more staff. 

Here are six workforce stories Becker's has reported since Jan. 18:

  1. Burnout in the healthcare provider workforce isn't going away, but some payers are finding ways to help. Leaders from UnitedHealth, Humana and L.A. Care spoke with Becker's about their programs designed to address burnout. 

  2. Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina is sponsoring an insurance pre-licensing academy as part of the payer's efforts to create a more diverse workforce in the insurance industry. The payer is putting $243,000 behind a program at Robeson Community College in Lumberton, N.C., to fund at least 90 students. 

  3. Bright Health is implementing another round of layoffs, with plans to lay off 68 employees at its Bloomington, Minn., headquarters April 1. The payer laid off 99 employees Jan. 7 and 150 employees in March 2022. 

  4. Cigna and Humana are leaders among healthcare companies for offering fair wages to employees, according to Just Capital's ranking of the "most just" companies. 

  5. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota is bringing on 300 employees to manage back-office work for its Medicaid programs and ending its contract with Amerigroup to manage these services. 

  6. Elevance Health scored the top spot in the healthcare industry for employee benefits and work-life balance, according to Just Capital's ranking of the "most just" companies. Cigna and Centene took second and third place.
