From the cancellations of new headquarters to significant office space reductions, payers nationwide are moving toward permanent remote and hybrid work. These are seven recent workforce and office moves reported by Becker's since July 1:
CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield is opening a 5,500-square-foot retail and community center in October at its Baltimore headquarters as part of a potential statewide expansion. The new space will consist of an area to sell health plans, care navigation support services and a community center.
Centene confirmed in August it is no longer moving forward with its plan to build a 2.4 million-square-foot East Coast campus in Charlotte, N.C., because of the shift to hybrid and remote work. Centene will keep its existing physical space in Charlotte's uptown neighborhood.
UnitedHealthcare is downsizing its office space in Connecticut, the Hartford Business Journal reported Aug. 12. Starting in September 2023, the payer will go from 350,000 square feet to 57,000 square feet within Hartford's CityPlace I building.
BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee launched its BlueSky Tennessee Institute, a college degree and training program aimed at fostering new IT talent for the company. The first class of 32 students met with executives at the payer's Chattanooga campus Aug. 1.
Molina Healthcare said July 28 it plans to reduce its real estate footprint by two-thirds in a move toward permanent remote work. The company will end leases on about 2 million square feet of office space across the country.
Evernorth moved into a new campus July 19 in Morris Plains, N.J. that aims to support hybrid work styles. The Cigna subsidiary has leased 200,000 square feet within the building and expects to have a maximum of 900 people on-site.
Centene said in July it is no longer moving forward with the remainder of a $775 million expansion of its corporate campus in Clayton, Mo.
