6 recent payer office moves

Recent office moves or investments by payers highlight the growing transition to hybrid workstyles. From new C-suite hires meant to support that transition to new headquarters locations, these are six recent office moves made by payers over the last month:

Half of BCBS Kansas employees now work remote or hybrid
About half of the 1,600 employees at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas now work remote or hybrid, the Wichita Business Journal reported June 29. The Topeka-based payer has also moved its Wichita office from the city's downtown to a 14,404-square-foot space at 8621 E. 21st Street, which is designed with hybrid work styles in mind.

CareFirst BCBS names chief digital information officer with hybrid work in mind
CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield named Dorothea "Dori" Henderson as senior vice president and chief digital information officer June 23, where she will lead efforts to modernize CareFirst workplaces that enable the company's hybrid workforce to connect better.

How Humana is embracing hybrid work styles
Humana is developing new workplace models to support a more hybrid workforce, ArchDaily reported June 23. The payer has introduced a fourth style of work for employees: hybrid home. The other three are office, hybrid office and home. The hybrid home model and recent renovations at the downtown Louisville, Ky., campus aim to support flexibility around employee commutes and when to come into the office in-person.

Centene to reduce real estate footprint by 65%
Centene said June 17 it will reduce its real estate footprint by 65 percent to incorporate a more "modern, flexible work environment." The payer is expecting a one-time cost of $750 million to $800 million to terminate leases and decommission space through the end of the third quarter of this year. Cutting the space will reduce expenses by $180 million to $200 million annually. 

BCBS Association to lease 95K square feet for new Chicago headquarters
The association is planning to lease a new space for its headquarters in downtown Chicago, The Chicago Tribune reported June 16. The federation of 34 BCBS companies said it plans to lease 95,000 square feet of space in the Aon Center at 200 E. Randolph Street, just one block from its current headquarters at 225 N. Michigan Avenue. The move for about 765 employees is expected to take place in late 2023 or 2024.

BCBS Association leases 64K square feet of DC office space
The association has leased nearly 64,000 square feet of office space in Washington, D.C., the Commercial Observer reported June 16. In 2024, the company will move from 1310 G Street NW to the 343,000-square-foot Victor Building at 750 9th Street in the city's East End neighborhood.
