Half of BCBS Kansas employees now work remote or hybrid

About half of the 1,600 employees at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas now work remote or hybrid, and the payer is expanding its presence in the Wichita market, the Wichita Business Journal reported June 29.

The payer has moved its Wichita office from the city's downtown to a larger space at 8621 E. 21st Street. The Topeka-based company will occupy 14,404 square feet in the building, which is designed with hybrid work styles in mind. Hoteling cubes will be offered for on-the-go employees and technology in the space is intended to support remote meetings.

Positions once required to be in Topeka can also now be worked elsewhere. Prior to COVID-19, 100 of the company's employees worked from home, but now it's closer to 800 when including hybrid.

"Our landscape has changed significantly since Covid. We really had kind of tapped out the Topeka market for a number of our operational positions," Nicki Flanagan, vice president and chief human resource officer at BCBS, told the Journal. "What we're wanting to do is position ourselves to be attractive for whatever work style you want."
