Why Blue Shield of California is pushing a 'blue zone' lifestyle to members

Blue Shield of California's 4.8 million members can now access a first-of-its-kind program from a health plan aimed at emulating the lifestyle habits of the world's longest living people.

Dubbed "blue zone regions," the new digital offering will focus on daily movement, socialization, and food choices inspired by people living in the regions with the longest lifespans, according to a July 31 news release.

"We are in the midst of a nationwide loneliness crisis, which impacts both the mind and the body, so we are thrilled to provide a solution that emphasizes healthy living, including community building," Angie Kalousek Ebrahimi, senior director of lifestyle medicine at Blue Shield, said.

Members will be able to complete assessments regarding longevity, happiness, nutrition and purpose, and the tracking of daily activities. The new blue zone program is offered through Blue Shield's Wellvolution platform, which offers 19 digital health programs to address and prevent a variety of needs, including diabetes, mental health, and tobacco cessation.
