Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota adding virtual culturally-sensitive care option

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota will provide 200 memberships to virtual culturally-sensitive care provider Health in Her Hue, the insurer said Sept. 30.

In a news release, BCBS Minnesota said it will fund these memberships as part of the company's digital health collaborations with the city of Brooklyn Center, one of the most racially diverse communities in Minnesota and the only city in the state led by both a Black mayor and city manager.

"We have dedicated investments on an annual basis around what we call place-based partnerships," BCBS Minnesota CEO Dana Erickson told Becker's earlier this year. "Brooklyn Center is one of them, where we're at the table. We believe that the answers come predominantly from the community, and we're there to support that."

Health in Her Hue connects Black women and women of color with culturally-sensitive care providers and evidence-based information curated by Black women and women of color.

Eddwina Bright, co-founder and chief product officer of Health In Her Hue, said in the news release that her own lived experience navigating the healthcare system influenced the launch of the platform.

"I know what it is like to not feel listened to, understood or cared for in a medical setting," Ms. Bright said. "We want to empower Black women to advocate for themselves and help them find a medical provider they can trust."
