The number of low-income Americans who may qualify for health coverage as a result of Medicaid's expansion in the U.S. is estimated to be approximately 10.5 million according to an analysis by Families USA.
Of the 27 states that have expanded enrollment, here are the top five with the highest total number of residents who may qualify for Medicaid, under the expanded qualification thresholds:
1. California (2.9 million)
2. New York (903,000)
3. Ohio (789,000)
4. Illinois (782,000)
5. Michigan (730,000)
Below are the top five states that have not expanded coverage with the highest total number of residents who could have qualified for Medicaid under the new threshold and are, according to Families USA, likely to remain uninsured:
1. Texas (2.5 million)
2. Florida (1.8 million)
3. Georgia (974,000)
4. North Carolina (804,000)
5. Pennsylvania* (682,000)
