Individuals who are part of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program will be able to enroll in ACA marketplace plans beginning in November.
In a final rule published May 3, CMS said it will extend marketplace eligibility to DACA recipients. The immigration program allows individuals brought to the U.S. as children without legal status to remain in the country.
CMS expects 100,000 uninsured DACA recipients could receive coverage through the program.
The agency did not finalize a rule that would have expanded Medicaid eligibility to DACA recipients. The change would have extended insurance coverage to around 500,000 people, Politico reported May 3.
More than one-third of DACA recipients are uninsured, HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said in a May 3 news release.
"HHS is committed to making health coverage accessible for DACA recipients —- Dreamers — who have worked hard to live the American Dream," Mr. Becerra said. "Dreamers are our neighbors and friends; they are students, teachers, social workers, doctors, and nurses. More importantly, they are fellow Americans."
