Nonprofit payers make up about a third of 5-star Medicare Advantage plans

About a third, or 31.6 percent, of the 57 Medicare Advantage plans that earned five stars from CMS in 2023 are a part of the Alliance of Community Health Plans, a trade group representing nonprofit payers.

Though ACHP members hold one third of the top performing plans, they only represent about 10 percent of all MA enrollees nationwide, according to an Oct. 20 news release.

"These scores are a result of community health plans' unique approach to coverage and care," ACHP President and CEO Ceci Connolly said. "When payers and providers work together, they're able to focus on consumers' needs—ensuring better health outcomes and an overall better care experience."

CMS released its plan ratings Oct. 6, which decreased on average from 4.37 stars in 2022 to 4.15 in 2023.
