Michigan governor urges all payers in state to cover reproductive care

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer sent a letter to every major payer in the state June 28 to urge them to provide coverage of reproductive healthcare as much as possible.

Full coverage means offering in-person and telehealth care, lowering cost-sharing requirements, covering travel expenses for out-of-state care and expanding contracts with providers who can offer reproductive care, according to a news release.

Michigan has a 1931 law on the books that criminalizes abortion with no exceptions, which went into effect when Roe v. Wade was overturned June 24.

In April, Ms. Whitmer’s office filed a lawsuit asking the Michigan Supreme Court to stop enforcement of that law and recognize the right to abortion under a privacy clause in the Michigan Constitutition, but the court has not issued a decision.

On May 17, a Michigan judge temporarily halted enforcement of the law because of a lawsuit from Planned Parenthood, meaning abortion is legal for now in Michigan.
