Medicare Advantage in the headlines: 7 recent updates

Payers are expecting big gains in Medicare Advantage enrollment in 2023 as the program now represents more than half of Medicare beneficiaries.

Here are seven updates about the program Becker's has reported since May 3:

  1. Humana will contract with two durable medical equipment companies to provide medical devices to its Medicare Advantage members.

  2. Humana had the largest Medicare Advantage membership growth in the first quarter of 2023, according to the company's earnings report. Here's how major payers stacked up in MA membership at the end of the first three months of 2023.

  3. Medicare Advantage enrollment now represents half of total Medicare enrollment. Here is Medicare Advantage enrollment as a percentage of the Medicare Part A and B population, year by year.

  4. More data is necessary to evaluate the quality of care Medicare Advantage beneficiaries with serious illnesses receive, a group of researchers wrote in the New England Journal of Medicine.

  5. Humana is launching new Medicare Advantage special needs plans with Longevity Health Plan in South Carolina and Georgia.

  6. Medicare Advantage directories are plagued with inaccuracies, particularly for mental health providers, the Senate Finance Committee Chair Ron Wyden said. Committee staff conducted a "secret shopper" study, calling behavioral health providers listed in 12 Medicare Advantage plan directories in six states, and found 33 percent of listings had inaccurate numbers or did not return calls.

  7. CVS Health is expecting big growth in its Medicare Advantage membership by the end of 2023, setting a different tone compared to the company's disappointment in "low- to mid-single-digit-percentage" growth late last year.
