Medicaid, CHIP coverage at risk for 15 million people

About 15 million people could lose Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program coverage when the COVID-19 public health emergency ends, HHS said in an Aug. 19 report.

Five things to know:

1. Fifteen million represents 17. 4 percent of all Medicaid and CHIP enrollees.

2. About 6.8 million people are expected to lose Medicaid coverage despite still being eligible.

3. Children and young adults will be disproportionately affected, with 5.3 million children and 4.7 million adults ages 18-34 predicted to lose Medicaid/CHIP coverage

4. About 4.6 million of those predicted to lose coverage are Latino, and 2.2 million are Black.

5. The public health emergency declaration runs through Oct. 13. The Biden administration said it will give states a 60-day notice before terminating the emergency.
