Humana in the headlines: 9 recent updates

Humana reported declining income in the face of rising medical costs and is adding new sponsorships.

Here are nine updates about the Louisville, Ky.-based company Becker’s has reported since Oct. 20. 

  1. Humana announced it is sponsoring four pickleball organizations in response to the increasingly popular sport’s “life-changing benefits both on and off the courts.” 
  1. Houston-based Memorial Hermann issued termination notices for Humana’s Medicare Advantage HMO and PPO networks and could go out of network if a new deal is not reached by Jan. 1. 
  1. Humana PPO payment rates for diabetes with complications ranged from $31,998 for Houston-based Memorial Hermann to $6,376 for Johnson City, Tenn.-based Ballad Health, according to data compiled by Hospital Pricing Specialists.
  1. An increase in COVID-19 inpatient admissions is one factor driving higher utilization rates in Medicare Advantage, Humana executives said.

  1. Humana reported a 30% decline in net income year over year in the third quarter of 2023. The company reported $832 million in net income in the third quarter in its earnings report, down from $1.2 billion in the same time period in 2022. 
  1. Humana subsidiary CarePlus Health Plans received $641,467 in net overpayments in 2015, an audit by HHS’ Office of Inspector General published Oct. 26 found. In a statement shared with Becker’s, a Humana spokesperson said the company “fundamentally disagrees” with the OIG’s report. 
  1. Kate Goodrich, MD, chief medical officer at Humana, sat down with Becker’s to discuss a companywide initiative to improve members’ health literacy.
  1. Humana plans to open eight new CenterWell clinics in Virginia in 2023 and 2024. 
  1. Zanesville, Ohio-based Genesis Healthcare System is dropping Anthem and Humana Medicare Advantage plans in 2024.
