Humana in the headlines: 10 updates

From renewed talks of a potential merger with Cigna to filing a lawsuit against CMS over its 2025 star ratings, here are 10 updates on Humana that Becker’s has reported since Aug. 16:

1. Former Humana president and CEO Bruce Broussard joined Define Ventures, a venture capital firm focused on early-state health tech companies, as venture partner. 

2. Cigna and Humana have renewed talks of a potential merger, according to Bloomberg. 

3. Humana filed a lawsuit asking a federal judge to require CMS to “retract and recalculate” its 2025 star ratings. 

4. Miami Beach, Fla.-based Clinical Care Medical Centers has entered into an agreement with Conviva, a subsidiary of Humana, for $45 million after the medical group sought Chapter 11 protection. 

5. Humana Medical Plan of Michigan was one of nine health plans awarded contracts to manage Michigan’s Medicaid program for individuals dually-eligible for Medicare and Medicaid. 

6. UnitedHealth, Humana and Florida Blue saw the largest declines in average star ratings out of the 15 largest Medicare Advantage insurers by membership. 

7. Twelve physician groups expressed their “profound objection” to Humana’s classification of a spinal procedure as “unproven” in a letter to the healthcare insurer.

8. Humana is among 62 organizations participating in the Medicare Advantage Value-Based Insurance Design model in 2025.

9. Humana received an estimated $13.1 million in overpayments for one MA contract in 2017 and 2018, according to an audit from the HHS’ Office of Inspector General. 

10. Humana agreed to settle allegations it submitted fraudulent bids for its Part D plans between 2011 and 2017.
