The country's largest commercial payers posted strong results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2019.
Here is how Anthem, Cigna, Humana and UnitedHealth fared:
1. In the three months ended March 31, Anthem reported revenues of $24.7 billion, up 9.4 percent from $22.5 billion recorded in the same period a year prior. Anthem ended the first quarter with net income of $1.6 billion, up 18.2 percent from a $1.3 billion profit recorded in the first quarter of 2018.
2. Cigna's revenue in the first three months of this year rose to $33.4 billion, up from $11.4 billion in the same period a year prior. The health insurer ended the first quarter with $1.4 billion in profit, up nearly 50 percent from $915 million reported in the first quarter of last year.
3. For the three months ended March 31, Humana posted revenues of $16.1 billion, up 12.8 percent from $14.3 billion reported in the same period a year prior. Humana recorded net income of $566 million in the first quarter of this year, up 15.3 percent from $491 million in the same quarter a year before.
4. UnitedHealth Group recorded revenues of $60.3 billion for the three months ended March 31, up 9.3 percent from $55.2 billion reported in the same period a year earlier. The company ended the first quarter with net earnings attributable to shareholders of $3.5 billion, up 22 percent from a profit of $2.8 billion reported in the first quarter of 2018.
