In 2022, 10 states boasted uninsured rates below 5%, and each took specific strategies to get there, according to a Nov. 26 analysis from Vox.
According to the Census Bureau, 9 states had uninsured rates above 10% in 2022: Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, Wyoming, Florida, Nevada, Alaska, Mississippi and Arizona. States with uninsured rates below 5% were New Hampshire, New York, Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota, Rhode Island, Vermont, Hawaii, Massachusetts and Washington, D.C.
According to Vox, Massachusetts achieved the nation's lowest uninsured rate of 2.4% by integrating the enrollment process for Medicaid and ACA plans into one portal and offering additional ACA subsidies on top of federal assistance, which eight other states also do.
Minnesota and New York offer a Basic Health Plan for individuals up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level that may not qualify for Medicaid but still struggle financially.
Colorado and Washington now offer a state-sponsored plan on their ACA exchanges. They also offer coverage subsidies for undocumented immigrants either through Medicaid or other public options.
