HHS predicts 8.4M will face full brunt of premium increases

As many as 8.4 million individuals will shoulder sizeable health plan premium hikes next year, according to HHS data.

Of the affected individuals, about 7 million purchase health coverage directly from payers, The Wall Street Journal reports. Another 1.5 million buy plans on HealthCare.gov or a state-based exchange, but are ineligible for tax subsidies under the ACA.

The Obama administration has continued to deemphasize problems associated with the ACA, such as double-digit premium increases and major insurer exchange withdrawals.

While the majority of the 10 million using federal and state ACA exchanges receive subsidies toward their premiums, the number of individuals ineligible for subsidies is not substantially different, according to the report.
