Centene in the headlines: 8 recent developments

From shuffling its leadership team to winning California Medicaid contracts under a revised plan, here are eight stories about Centene that Becker's has covered since Dec. 5:

1. Centene's California-based subsidiary Health Net picked up Medi-Cal contracts in Sacramento and Los Angeles counties under the state's revised plan. Health Net had originally lost out to Molina Healthcare in those counties when the initial awards were released in August. Health Net said it will end legal action related to the contract awards.  

2. A lawsuit from a pension fund holding Centene stock accused former executives of conspiring to defraud state Medicaid programs. The lawsuit accuses the former executives of violating its Medicaid managed care contracts and federal and state law. 

3. Centene agreed to a $44.4 million settlement with Iowa to resolve allegations that it overbilled the state's Medicaid program for pharmacy benefits and services.

4. Superior HealthPlan, a Centene subsidiary Medicaid-managed care plan in Texas, added a partnership with mobile home healthcare provider MedArrive. 

5. Centene promoted Ken Fasola to president and Jim Murray to COO as current president and COO Brent Layton plans to retire. Dave Thomas, currently Centene's executive vice president of markets, was promoted to CEO of markets and Medicaid. The payer also named Alice Chen, MD, as chief medical officer, and Brian LeClaire, PhD, as chief information officer. 

6. Centene agreed to pay Oregon $17 million to settle allegations the payer overcharged the state's Medicaid program for pharmaceutical services. 

7. Centene's philanthropic arm and its Superior HealthPlan subsidiary donated $7.9 million to a new community center in Uvalde, Texas. 

8. Centene finalized its sale of pharmaceutical benefit manager MagellanRx to Prime Therapeutics.
