More than 20 million Americans gained coverage under the ACA, but many may be paying more out of pocket as they sign up for high deductible health plans, according to a report from the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics.
In the first three months of 2017, 28.1 million Americans remained uninsured, according to the report. While this still represents a significant portion of the population — about 8.8 percent — it demonstrates notable improvement over pre-ACA insurance levels. In 2010, 20.5 million more people were uninsured.
However, despite the increase in coverage, the CDC report suggests more Americans may be paying out of pocket for their care as the popularity of HDHPs continues to increase among the privately insured. According to CDC numbers, the percentage of adults under age 65 enrolled in a HDHP increased from 25.3 percent in 2010 to 42.3 percent in the first three months of 2017.
