From two new CEOs to year-end financial earnings, these are 10 key updates about Blue Cross Blue Shield companies recently reported by Becker’s:

1. Excellus BCBS and Univera’s parent organization, Lifetime Healthcare Co., said in May it has plans to merge with Capital District Physicians Health Plan.

2. BCBS Association and Blue Health Intelligence released a study in May that found a majority of patients taking weight loss drugs discontinue use of their medication before reaching a clinically meaningful health benefit.

3. BCBS Michigan named Tricia Keith as its next president and CEO, effective in 2025. 

4. BCBS Louisiana named Bryan Camerlinck as CEO in May.

5. Blue Shield of California named Lois Quam as president, Kassie Maroney as SVP and chief actuary, and Susan Mullaney as EVP of strategic initiatives in May.

6. Healthy Blue, a newly formed collaboration between BCBS Kansas, BCBS Kansas City and Elevance Health, was awarded a Kansas Medicaid contract in May. 

7. BCBS Rhode Island reported a $26 million operating loss in 2023, which it said reflected a “substantial surge in medical and pharmacy claims,” the company said in April.

8. Independence Blue Cross reported $377 million in net income in 2023, the company said in April.

9. Anthem Blue Cross of California was sued by the California Hospital Association in April, which alleges the payer violated the state’s patient safety laws by failing to facilitate members’ transfer to post-acute care. 

10. BCBS Association and BCBS Michigan must face a lawsuit from Ford Motor Co. over an alleged antitrust conspiracy among Blues plans to fix healthcare prices, thereby overcharging Ford for health insurance provided to its employees, a federal judge ruled in March.
