Payers ranked by first-quarter net income:
1. UnitedHealth
UnitedHealth Group recorded $5.1 billion in first-quarter net earnings, increasing from nearly $5 billion in 2021, a 3.4 percent increase.
Net income increased 4 percent year over year, rising from $2.2 billion in 2021 to $2.3 billion in 2022.
3. Anthem
The company’s net income grew to nearly $1.8 billion from $1.67 billion in 2021, a 7.7 percent increase.
4. Cigna
Shareholders’ net income for the first quarter of 2022 was $1.2 billion, only slightly more than the first quarter of 2021, or a 1.2 percent increase.
5. Humana
Net income grew 12.3 percent year over year, growing to $930 million in 2022 from $828 million in 2021.
6. Centene
Net earnings in the first quarter of 2022 were $849 million, compared to $699 million in 2021, a 21.5 percent increase.
